short/mixed pass & from the middle it's for sure.
vs strong teams > start with def/counters
vs equal, weak > normal
if it's a critical game vs team with equal q, then use man to man.
if you want to reverse a result, then high pressing
normal tackling

My base orders are
Normal against equal/attacking against easy quality
Short passing
Through the middle
High press/own half also works but I like posession
Normal tackling
Zonal marking
No counter
No offside
No arrows

Does def/counter work well with diamond? I never tried it.

def/counters works with every formation (if you have of course max 4 attackers - STs & wingers).
+ can drag in your area, oppo players if they are many in his field and when cut his play, strike back with one to one situations
- if his defenders win the ball, you are a little more vulnerable in his counter

also creates long passes even if you have set only short passing.
Top eleven defense counters isn't like real football. I had many many super domination scores with it.
