But normally you can bid right down until you are out of tokens? and even when you have none left you can still click the bid button, it just asks you if you want to buy more tokens.

P.S. with 2 tokens to start with it was very unlikely you were going to win the auction - I normally make sure i have at least 8 tokens before bidding for a player, preferably more.
