The amount of players is adjusted at Season start you are given 3* retirees to fill a minimum squad.
You don't say if you are on handy app or desktop, but either way..
There is something else the issue, clear all caches and make sure you have strong internet. Kill other apps or programs that are running.
Try on other machines or connections, if using desktop try a different browser.
