Apparently what I've heard is that the player has to be present at the field for at least 20 minutes to be credited an appearance.

No, you're wrong.
If this player in your next game (let's say that he starts from the beginning), have another one assist, then a manager who's interesting for him, will see your player with two assists in one game ;)
