Which is a better formation in your opinion?

It depends on you want to play attacking or defending and your opponent's formation. 4-5-1 flat help you control the midfield area but only 1 Striker doesn't help you score many goals if your opponent has strong DCs. I myself prefer 4-4-2 Narrow Diamond (DMC - MC - MC - AMC) with "Through the middle" and "short pass".
