i always use 4-4-1-1 to counter 4-4-2 and the result is quite good :D
Try 3n-1 DMC-5 flat-1 ST.
I had very good results from this fromation.

You can put attack arrows on the middle MC / middle MC and MR,ML.
But this dependson the team your facing.
Attacking, if you want to win, you need to attack.
Long pass, you only have one ST.
Force counter, your whole team is in one place, and in this formation, the ST wil receive a pass, and will go in the wing and cross quite often.

In fairness i am a sceptic when it comes to counter formations. I truly believe it is down to player ability and tactics.
