Explanation of formations

Would someone be able to explain what W & N in formations mean please? For example, 3W-1-3N-1-2. Also what is the butterfly, dandelion, etc that people keep talking about when mentioning formations. Cannot seem to find them on the forum. Thank you.

w mean wide N mean narrow for example 3w in defence mean dl dc dr and 3N in defence mean dc dc dc and in midfield w mean mr mc ml but N mean 3 mc .for the names butterfly mean the formation looks like butterfly and so on

Just as Essokimo said, W means wide and N means narrow.
