I would say 3N-2(DML/R)-3N-2 as an alternative for ND. I have great difficulties playing this formation using 4-4-2 this season. The 3N-DML/R defense seems key in neutralizing the ML/R's plus his ST. I think you can choose between a 3N-2 or a 2-1-2 midfield/attack. I'll do some testing later on, as I'm looking for the best counter for 4-4-2 as my counter for last season, 3N-1-3W-1-2 doesnt get me the results anymore.
vs 4-4-2 use 3N-2W-2-2W-1 Butterfly attacking both flanks and u should be fine :D
