how about non symetric formations

Hi guys I am building my squad still (at lvl 1 yet). I will try to complete full squad of 22 guys to be able to play in champs league an cup next season. Thats why i am considering my tactical options . I gues I will drop rdm/ldm type of players and will try to have other type of players with the idea to be able to play different formations. Now my question is would nonsymetric formations work in top 11. Last night I had to play with 4-4-2 with LAM and RM on the other side. The team worked well but was I lucky or not and what about even more strange non symetric formations would they work (as far as rules for legal formations are appied)
