I would have probably gone with a 3N-1-4-2 (Attacking) or 4-1-2-1-2 (ND - Defensive) - formation d epending on how my players and team stacked up against the oppo.

Tactics like that are simply annoying for you as every part of the field is blocked for an attack.
Try to do mixed attack and short passes as most of his players are not close to each other.
