What do you think of this formation?

    Hey guys,

I'd like to hear what you think about the following formation:

Since I'm in a very tough league (I'm the 2nd weakest team) I thought I should try out a defensive formation that still is strong in the midfield so that I can score a few goals but don't concede many.

These are the orders I wanna use:

So dear forum members, now it's your turn. I would appreciate if you tell me what you think about this formation and the orders or what you would change...

    Thx in advance,

    Mr. Marco

Should be an okay counter formation, i've seen some people use 4-1-4-1 in tough leagues aswell- thoes work fine too :P
How about 3N-2W-3N-2? I find it a good counter formation too :P It's up to your team and what they'r quality and performance for certian roles are.
Check you'r strongest opponent's formation and see if they attack thru middle or flanks, once u've figured out that you can build ur standard counter formation w/o having to change it much.
I personally never got in a tough league so i couldnt test thoes formations with my main team but my alt teams did pretty good job with 3-2-3-2 winning the cup and league in 1 season w/o spending a penny for tokens

I use this on my counterattacking side last season when either of the DML/DMRs are injured or defending the middle is critical. It never conceded many against high Q opposition.

My only suggestion would be changing Pressing Style to Whole Pitch. While it seems counter-intuitive to press the whole pitch while defending, if you take the view that Whole Pitch means running about everywhere the ball is, but I believe that Whole Pitch is not that your players are Forced to press everywhere but rather it removes the restriction of only pressing in 'Own Half'.

Because my experience of 2.5 seasons on Defensive Counter-attacking only is that Whole Pitch works best in effective defensive formations which counterattack.

My only warning would be that you want decent defensive qualities on your MCs because, as you know you are aiming for fast beaking counterattacks from your wide men.

PS. when it works you should get a whole heap of corners. )

    Just 'imo'.

Well before I had this formation above I've used 3n-2w-3n-2 and it didn't work well to be honest.
Especially against opponents that play with a normal 4-4-2 I had huge problems...
Yeah I already checked my opponents and I can't really say who's the strongest^^
Concerning the quality they're all about 110-112 (mine is ~107) 'cause most of them are in this league level for the second time. So yeah it's really hard to say who's gonna win. That's why I thought I stick to one formation that is quite defensive and look what happens.

Well that sounds great! Thank you very much for your help!
I think changing the pressing style to whole pitch could work. I never tried it out in all the 18 Seasons I've been playing so far to be honest but looking at your explanation I think I'll give it a go
Yup I adapted the skill point distribution a few days ago so that the formation fits the players well.

Well that would be great if I get much corners!! My corner kick specialist is a beast!!
About half of my goals are shot after corners ;-)

Thank you both for your answers! I really appreciate that you took the time to help me

    Greetings

    Mr. Marco

I should make clear this formation was my second choice when 3N-2W-3N-2 was not feasible or appropriate. But I did like it fwiw.

And since you mentioned 4-4-2 I found 4-4-2 to be quite tricky to Defend and counterattack.....it can be a good counterattacking formation in its own right.

Well that's something that I'm not sure about...
My players don't get more cards if I play with hard tackling than with normal tackling (at least I don't remark a significant difference) and that's why I use hard tackling more often than normal tackling.

However, in the last few games, I was wondering why my opponents had so many free kicks...
That could be the reason for it :-)
