Butterfly is useful formation against 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 4-2-3-1 and even 4-4-2. I have used it few times against 3cb formations without fullback or WDM support. If you have double-position players, you can transform it easly into 4-1-4-1 or 4-5-1V
