Counters to Strange Formations

At level 5 I keep running into teams that use strange offset formations. They are weaker, but I am struggling to win against them. What is the consensus about how to counter these teams.

Example:

or

---------------------
----- ST---ST-----

treat it like 3n-5-2 flat, use 4-2-2-2 hex or something that attacks the flanks

Yes that's what I've been doing. I just wanted to make sure that was the correct thought process.
