play a 4-1-4-1 or a 4-5-1V, def, counter attack. If you manage to score a goal, you 'll have the advantage.

You got extremely unlucky being drawn against a team like that in the champions league at level 2. Most CL draws don't have a team like that @ your level.

As Nik said. Additionally, The 3n-2w-2n-2w-1 butterfly is another defensive formation that sometimes does well against the 4-4-2 classic.

4-3W-1-2 is an offensive formation. This will probably work against 4-4-2 where the opponent is of almost the same quality or of lower quality.
