Interesting, maybe some 451 formation (like 4141, 451 flat, 451V, 43n2w1) or narrow diamond? What I'm more sure about is tactics: long passing (due his dense mildfield line) through flanks zonal marking red arrows on fullbacks

Yes long pass on flanks. And if you have amr and aml make sure they play. I suggest hexagon.

Hex would make his middle weak due 2MC against oppo's 3MC+DMC, that could have impact on ball possession. I would not counter him without 3 middle mildfield players, but that's just mine opinion.

Yes there are no whipping boys anymore. No abandoned teams (that I've seen recently anyway). Bottom team in my league has 16 points this season.
