Weird 4-4-2 ( or 4-2-2-2) counter options?

Was wondering how to counter effectively this formation to be able to have a fair chanche to score. Posting on a buddy's behalf, he lost the first leg 0-1 with quite similar strenght and possession. He used 4-5-1 V in first half (0-0 with more possession) and switched to 3-2dmc-2mc-2amc-1 in second half losing some possession. Goal came from penalty.

How is the formation? Is the MC to the right, and AMC to the left? Or both central?
