I've had success with narrow diamond against that. I'm against that very same formation in my cup match today against a stronger team. For the home leg, I went 4-1-3n-1-1, and came out in top. We'll see how it does on the away leg.

    Just to follow up:

I just finished the away leg of my cup matchup.
Opp using 3-2w-2-1-2 with average quality 70.4 vs me using 4-1-3n-1-1 with average quality 68.3. I went with defensive/counter/focus through middle/short pass/high press. Up arrows on defensive wingers. Back arrows on DMC and DCs. Ended up winning 0-3. 65% possession, 20 shots vs 8 shots and 89% pass completion.

Why 'high pressing'? Forcing counter-attacks and high pressing are likely to be not compatible as they require 'opposite' actions.

I started low. Then the assistant manager said I should press (I know I shouldn't listen to him). Didn't seem to make much difference. Scored three goals while high pressing and I just rode it until the end. Side note: I use the condition bonus exclusively when I'm set in high press.

What were your orders for the home leg and what was the score?

Home leg was normal and high press with no counter. Score was 2-0. Everything else the same.

    63% possession, 24 shots vs 14, 91% pass completion

4-4-2 Narrow Diamond is pretty good, depending on how your MCs face up against your opponents. If you have the edge then this is probably the best formation. You don't want to play a 4-5-1 V because that places your two attacking midfielders in the same lanes as your opponents defensive mids, and with only one striker (without outside mismatches) your going to have a tough game. If you have 2 good AMCs I would consider a 4-1-2-2-1 as they should have space in front of the goal.
