Setting arrows to tactic formations

I have been playing Top Eleven for more than a year, but I still do not understand how to use arrows in tactic formation. Does it make any difference whether I use attacking or deffensive mode?
Additionally, does it matter if I use zonal or man-to-man marking style?
I usually play as follows:
Focus passing: Mixed or down both flanks
Pressing style: Own half
Tackling style: Normal
Passing style: Mixed
Force counterattacks: YES
Play offside trap: NO

My usual formation is
GK
DL-DC-DC-DR
DMC
ML MC MR
ST ST

Without knowing the effect, I use Red Arrow to my MR and ML players and sometimes to my MC one.

I would appreciate any information on this issue
