My opponent is playing 4-4-2 counter ON and mixed passes...Best formation and tactics to beat him???? Help!!!!

Ok so 4-4-2 Is well balanced so can't really focus on any specific side or through the middle so he's playing counter so more then likely going defensive as he is also using short passes to retain possession. My idea would be to set up normal against him and look at his squad beforehand see if there is a weak player in his starting XI and focus your attacks in that specific area
