Use 4-1-4-1 if opponent is 5% to 20% stronger than you, or you are comfortable with a draw (say for a 2nd leg tie when you have a healthy lead).
3-5F-2 if you have at least equally good midfielders vs opponents’.
3-5V-2 if you have good AML/AMR (and better than using worse ML & MR) to outscore your opponent
