I think for most people, it's more of a psychological thing. Once you pass a certain token count, it's like you're already fully committed and don't want to get nothing for the tokens you've spent so...

4-4-2 can also be beaten by the butterfly formation. 4-5-1 V isn't as effective if the opponent puts red arrows on ML/MR. Butterfly takes care of that with the wingbacks
