Do counter attack through the middle
I use a variation of the wm formation so 3-2-2-2-1 worked really well for me as won league and champions league in same season
Try counter attack short passing through the middle, defensive against better teams and attack when favourite
Use 4 or 5 in midfield and attack down the flanks maybe use counter attack and go either defensive or normal with short passes as due to the extra midfield players you should hold more possession so...
Ok so 4-4-2 Is well balanced so can't really focus on any specific side or through the middle so he's playing counter so more then likely going defensive as he is also using short passes to retain...
Is he playing 3 CBs or LB CB RB?

Experiment with some formations and see which works best for you based on your style of play and what team you like to have
