Yes if your phone is rooted could be the cause of the error.
Anyway, try to find at Google some kind of solution to fix that.

I didn't said to you to connect the game with your Google account, I'm talking only in phone settings.
Try to Google it "session expire Google account" and see if you can find any solution for...
Try it the first option: "sign-in and security" (my phone is in portuguese language by default), and check if you have your current Google account in there.

I don't see from anybody any complains about Google connection.
