3 defenders is viable. Risky, but viable. If your oppo has 3 defenders, use your extra man to have 3 strikers.
If he has four defenders, use your extra man as a midfielder and have more possession....

That looks like something I would try.

Last season I faced teams above my level all the way to the cup final. Tactics were the only thing that kept me in. I just disagree with you, based on personal experience.
