The only reason I still have a facebook account is to continue playing this game but I would like to play without having one if possible? If not, I might just have to wrap up and retire, which is a pitty because I enjoy playing this game, but I will be deleting my facebook account soon and the game with it if it cannot be separated.
Any options to keeping the game without facebook?
You can play via web... I'm not sure right now, btu I think that if your team is linked with a FB account then, if you delete the FB account this will be deleted soo...
With the mobile app is different... you can start there and then exist (or existed) the option to link it with FB but if you wanted.

U only can play with account facebook
If you play with a phone or tab, go to settings, swipe to the right, and right there you shall find options to connect/disconnect from Facebook and Google. You can just disconnect from Facebook and connect to Google
