Random or not, the game has to have a "match engine" that has to simulate all kinds of results and factor in possession bonus, substitutions, form, morale, etc.

I don't really think so. I have come across game (many many times) that I lose to an opponent who is at least 10points (total) less than mine and at few of the players are not in the correct position. How to explain? Is this called random that happen in real soccer. There should be something in the server that is preset to have you win or lose. Well, few times within several seasons is acceptable but few times in a season is weird.
Anyway, no one knows except the developer

Lol, If they set that, I think the guy in level 35 will sue Nordeous. Of course the preset result would not go beyond the extreme impossible but mostly within the same or few levels. Anyway, this is what I suspect and really hope it is not the way I think and game results are based on our setup / management.
Yeah, so they're slightly random sometimes, maybe, and that's fine. It's possible to overcome the random factor, though. One piece of advice I have is to moderate everything, just because you are slightly stronger, do not go hard attacking away from home and whole pitch pressure, you will be punished on the counter.
We hear a lot of complaints on here, but sometimes they are managers who do not know what they are doing.
Then that is the reason for the big loss. In this case, inactive managers get a slight advantage because their players were not trained after yesterday's matches.

The results are not preset. the game engine would have takend the existing teams with the orders & run the match with them. Most of us would have still had the previous games teams & orders in place & those are what the game engine would have used to come p with the results.
For me 0-0 draw, made no difference to my League season, still finished on top. However I do know 2 friemds who are livid who were 1 point behind the leader & did not set their teams or orders for the final game.
No regrets
