The MotM award could be because that player played far above his usual performance. I often notice that the ratings are higher when a low quality player does good things during a game. They play above their level and get a good rating. If rating was tied to quality, bad teams would always get low grades, yet they don't, so it doesn't seem to have much to do with their quality.
