Stop Signon retiree

What is the purpose of the stop sign on he player about to retire?
There is no option to resign nor sell, only to sack

I guess it's just there to remind you he's retiring from the game

Anything else but the STOP sign.

I want to STOP him from retiring.

Yeah it's a bummer to see that sign on a player you like.
