Illegal formation and i still didnt win...

I am playing Top Eleven for the first time since last week. So i still have some difficulties.
    I have a question:

My opponent today is top in the league but he use this formation:

    GR
    DC DC
    MD MD
    MC MC MC
    MA
    AC AC

This is an illegal formation, right?

Still i dint win,...just tied ... even with a red card for him at 83'.

    My formation was

    GR
    RD DC DC LD
    MDC
    MC MC MC
    MA
    AC

Maybe not the best... but i was wonder... he played with an illegal formation and still didn't lose....why?

Why didn't you go down both flanks and choose the center with only on Striker? 4-5-1V motivated would have done the Job. Don't cry about illegal formations when your setup is weak!

An illegal formation does not mean a sure loss, in some cases, the team will even win the match. Like Mar Wie said, you should have gone down both flanks. The formation was illegal both for having no wide players and for having only two defenders.

I know that an illegal formation doesn't mean a sure loss and i need to learn quite more. However my formation wasn't illegal. I played with four defenders. And i had 2 wide players at defense exactly. That is a perfectly normal formation even in real life.
However i admit that there were best ones for this one...

I tend to play very attacking formations such as 4-3-3 or 3-4-3 when I play vs Illegal formations, you have 80% ball possession so you want to have your possession in their half of the pitch and putting on shots on goal, No point sitting back when you always have the ball.

No, your formation was fine, I was pointing out why his formation was illegal, and why you should have attacked his flanks.
