No way to turn it off, it is part of the way it was made. :(
You can set which attributes to focus on instead. It is in the SKILLS tab of the player info box. It's not much, but it helps to avoid random assignments.

I saved points just to see how fast player gains them. If fast - i decided to use player several seasons, if slow - i started new skill and sell it next season.

Webversion is auto-assigning too now........It seems. For me anyways.
