i don't think you have to click on them to get the boost, after every training the whole team get some percentages of bonuses which are added automatically ,the only reason to click on them during the match is to see them not to add them .

I mean you don't click on them in game to get a boost

Well thank you for telling me , i really didn't know that Guess i only made my players stronger with training and never used the bonuses .
