Still grayed out? if so, it needs to change

Hi, I am a level 4 manager and have some players that have the max defense\attack that they are able to get. I thought this would change with a new season but it looks to stay that way. So is 42 on defense the max this player will ever get?

I am able to add stats to other things but would love to be able to make my defense for this player better for when he gets to other leagues. Is this normal? Will it change? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this the best this player will get and I need other new players to get higher?

Just confused and not found any info on this...

the difference between highest and lowest cant be bigger than 20. u need to put points into attacking only then u can put points into defense

dude, you think your defenders doesnt need to be good at passing, crossing or shooting? :) i cant get why people train only one bar...
