    How to beat a 4-4-2

    Hi guys,
I am 3-0 down in a cup aggregate against a 100% side who plays a 4-4-2. May you please help me out on choosing a formation and tactics which can effectively counter and possibly win me the tie.

    Please provide at least with:

    1) The opponent’s formation of last match - assuming that he would keep the same for return leg

    2) Your ‘squad-line up’ - so we could have a better idea of what player positions you have to make a better counter

4-4-2 is one of the most difficult to have a perfect counter with, as it could play either via middle or flank. The general weakness is between the lines.

4-1-4-1AM to play on counter via middle if you only have 1 very good attacker. 1 ST vs 2 DCs is not likely to win many battles.
3-1-4-1AMC-1 if you have 2 top attackers and 4th best defender is a lot weaker than opponent’s STs. All DMC, AMC & ST to be pulled back to be as close to own region as possible for area control.

    Best of luck there!

Thanks for your team info above.

Since you have got 4 decent defenders/DMC (cannot play both DL; 5th defender DC is 1* weaker than opponent’s STs, it is not worth the risk of playing 4 defenders plus DMC.

2 approaches that I would suggest:

    1) Conservative start & change to aggressive by no later than 30th min if margin is still 3 goals, or 2 goals by half-time

Start: 3-1DMC-4-1AMC-1. Counter on, mixed or long, low pressing & zonal. Back-3 back-arrow. Best MC up-arrow
Change to: 3-4-1-2. Counter on, mixed or long, high pressing & man-to-man

If margin is narrowing to less within the suggested timeframe and scoring is via counter-attack, it may even be better to stick with counter for longer.
Should score with 3-4-1-2, but also very easy to concede.

    2) Reverse of above. Start with 3-4-1-2 to hope to score 3 first then revert to counter.

Make sure all starter and likely subs’ conditions are maxed, plus match bonus also maxed.

Wish you the best of luck!
