 Fouls and free kicks

I know that refs can miss things and sometimes play the advantage. However, I would have thought that most fouls would lead to a free kick. Why then, in the in-play stats, are there always less free kick than fouls. Could someone explain this to me, please.

The fouls that count as freekicks in the match stats are fouls that result in direct freekicks and fouls close enough to the box for a player to cross into the box.
Every other foul does not register as a freekick in the match stats.
