WHY???? would anyone with a brain bid 6-8-more rounds on a 3 star player?

I would say it's because of this new Cup format. Seen many many teams with a stong 11 even 13 players. The rest just absolute rubbish sitting on the bench. Which brings the team average right down,so they get an easier cup run against teams with the same average. Have a cup game tonight,his first team are ALL a star or 2 better than my first 11. His bench has only 1/2/3 Star players. Clever move by Nordous,people having bidding wars on ALL players

Apparently they use the top 11 players for their calculations, so fitting your team with 3* players to bring your average down has no effect whatsoever.

only time i bid for 3* is if young and free and seem to get them for 1 no more than 2 tokens ( save on loan ) not that i need now :0, then train and sell on or sell strate on, money money money love free money i got 3* star at start of season for one token now training

OK, I conceive of the unusual case where you might actually want to buy a 3 star player ... but i can't imagine any time when you'd go more than 2-3 tokens for them.
So why do I keep running into these idiots 2 levels above me who want to get into bidding wars over a player who would only be 3 stars to them? Once or twice, sure, but 2 out of every 3 times I hit the market???

This is a case where the conspiracy theory is far more rational than the alternative.

I always take a really good look at the teams that are bidding. This includes age of squad, money, needs etc. I can guarantee you that in "some cases" for whatever reason, you "are" bidding against bots my friend. Don't worry, you are not the only one who has noticed this stuff. Not saying this is the case here, but, it does happen.

Those bidders are 2 levels lower than you, so they will see him as 5* player and try to bid on him...

Its the other way around, he sees them as 5* players and people outbid him for what they see as 3* player.
