I'm a noob please help me understand this

Hi as I said I'm a noob so can someone please explain to me how you read these numbers 4-4-4-4-4 and all the 100 more. I mean when I look at those numbers how do I know what formation it is. People here post formations like 4-3-2-1 and everyone knows what formation it is but I don't, so please make me understand.

Its quite simple really, imagine the pitch with your goalkeeper on the left. A 4-4-2 formation would then be: 4 Defenders, 4 Midfielders and 2 Strikers.

More complex formations involve Defensive midfielders (DML, DMC, DMR) these sit between midfielders and the defenders and Attacking Midfielders (AML, AMC, AMR) these sit between the midfielders and the strikers.

So a 4-1-2-1-2 formation would be: 4 Defenders, 1 Defensive Midfielder, 2 Midfielders, 1 Attacking Midfielder and 2 Strikers.

That's the basics, of course. And then we have stuff like 4-5-1 flat and 4-5-1V. 4-5-1 flat is just flat, easy to understand, I hope. Players symmetrically placed in the D, M and ST rows. 4-5-1V would have the midfield arranged in a V shape, DMC, MC, MC, AML, AMR. This is how football formations are referred to, it's not a T11 thing.
