but you have to hope he is playing attacking for any chance of that working.

I think the game engine was kind to you, playing only one DC against two strikers with flank attacks from his wide men he should have taken the game.
You need to stop his flank attacks, also your AMC is being blocked by his DMC so he is doing very little.
If you have the players try this, his ST are covered by three DC's, his MR&ML blocked by your DRM/L your MC's match his, and his DR&DL cant push forward as your AMR/L would be free, his own DMC will need to move over to double up with one of his DR or DL depending on which side your attack comes from leaving your other AM player and Strike one v one.

I'm sure the game engine will will not be so kind this time, so try this.
As you have no DML use a DMC and put him in the square nearest to where the DML would be.
Hard defensive, down doth flanks, own half, normal, passing long, zonal, No OS, force counter yes. You could try hard tackle but if he has free kick specialist it will probably cost you goals, but there is a chance the game engine will let you off as he has far more quality.
this time no lucky :D 2-1 for him, I use this formation ^, When he scored me second goal in 81 min., Change the formation with 3 ST :D and very attacking and in 89 min. i scored (rofl)
