I have done that many times with no success as they bid at the last second when I do but I guess it really depends who you're up against. The guys I bid against always bid last second and I always bid at the start, I usually win these because they end up getting lag and missing out.

Not necessarily lag, they could have just dropped out. I'm one of those last second bidders, and if I see the opponent putting in early bids with no chance for me to steal the player by leaving them no chance to react, I'd stop bidding.
