Cannot see friend's matches

I cannot see one of my friends matches and he cannot see mine. i'm wondering why?

at first i thought it was a setting, but there anything in privacy settings to affect this. then i thought he's on a different server, but then i found he's in a league currently with two other mutual friends and i can see their games and they can see mine, and it wouldn't make sense to have a league with players from different servers playing against one another.

at this point i'm not sure what else could possibly be making this happen. anybody know of have thoughts on it?
