Is that his formation:
DL-----DC------DR
---DMC---DMC----
---MC----MC------
----ST---ST-------
If that's the case, go for the classic 4-4-2. Attack down the flanks, red arrows on MR/ML. Attack mentality if you're playing home and are stronger than the opponent. Mixed passing.

No you missed 1 more dmc/mr

Try this then
4-3-2N-1
Red arrows on AMCs and blue arrow on middle MC. Normal and mixed passing. Counterattacks.

In that case, it's the game engine that went weird. There's no way he should've won 4-0

well he did have 2 x 6* strikers which I guess explains things and he was level 3, im only level 2

Oh, you should've told me he was stronger, I would've went for something else then. Since you didn't specify, I thought you were better or as good as him. When facing a stronger team, go for defending or hard defending with counterattacks, if you don't win, at least you wont lose.
