I think you should play defensive. Blue arrow on all your defenders and red arrow on winger and striker. Try different passing during the match to see what's more effective. I personally would use short passing though.
I personally use 4-1-3W-2 as my main formation and just won over one level higher opponent that use 4-4-2 formation. Both home and away cup match. But it doesn't mean that 4-1-3W-2 will definitely win over 4-4-2, because I see a lot of team with 4-4-2 win over 4-1-3W-2 easily too. So it just comes down to the order setting I guess.
As the user of 4-1-3W-2 I can tell you that I struggled to win over 4-3-2W-1 and 4-3W-3. But I did eventually win so perhaps you can experiment with one of those formation as a start?
