    The big difference in the fact that both formations have four flank players is that with 3-2-2-2-1 your flank players are more advanced so in attack they have less ground to cover receiving the ball in positions where more damage can be caused and IMO it is just as balanced through the MF as 4-4-2.
    b Also because your flank players are directly in front of there's it tends to force longer balls to be played upto the strikers causing higher loss of possession.
    For me four lines of players will in most cases out play three generic lines.
    Level 1,2,3,4,5,6 League winners

    Level 1,2,3,5 CL Winners

    Level 4 CL runner up.

    Level 2,3,4 Cup winners

    I am the user of 3-2-2-2-1 i always have problem play with traditional 4-4-2 dont listen he wanna u to lose lol
    I would advice 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3
