The topic Table of Counter Formations v2.0 - Which formation to use? has three suggestions for countering a 4-4-2:
3N-4-1-2, 4-5-1 V-Style, 3N-2-2-2-1 Butterfly
I've personally had success against the 4-4-2 using a 4-4D-2 (DMC-ML-MR-AMC) in cases where the quality of the other team was within 2-3 points of my own team.
Thanks Cody Allan Taylor
4-3w-3 works wonders for me...
I find 4-4-2 flat my hardest formation to beat but this season playing 4-3w-3 has got me an underfeated record so far!, 5W 1D.
This season 3-5-2 flat or narrow diamond works perfectly well for me...
I will use this thread instead making a new one. Later in the night got a match (cl final) against a sort of 4-4-2. The opponent formation is 4-2(mc-mc)-2(aml+amr)-2st. Should i use your recommendation for 4-3(ml-mc-mr)-3 or ND or 4-5-1? Our stats are almost the same so the right formation will be the key for success.
4-5-1 V-Style for Ryanwong.
Normal, both flanks, DR/L and DMC motivated, mixed pass and finally Counter Attack on.
Try this.
Joretonnyc, that formation is the 4-2-2-2 Hexagone, the 4-5-1V-Style also could rule
what it means 4-3w-3
ML, MC AND MR ?
Thank you :)
on my Personally Experience 4-5-1 V and 4-3w-3
If you want to play with 4-4-2 give in ML-MR and 2 ST red "arrows". Only this for work your team.
But i think for your team the tactic 3-1-4-2 will be more better. and the arrows the same with 4-4-2.
And remember something... In football don't have matter if you win with 10+ goals, but if you win! ;) the goals you give will be forgotten once, but the match you lose will not forgotten.
(Sorry for my english).
I don't think the 4-4-2 classic has a natural counter because it's so balanced and versatile. One thing, I recommend is looking at the stats of your opponets players and see if you can identify what is the most likely arrows for his players. Whenever I face 4-4-2, I assume they'll attack the flanks and defend the middle but it isn't always the case. For example, in the champions league semifinals I can up against a 4-4-2 classic and noticed his wingers has scored a total of 2 goals all tournament, whereas his midfielders had at least quadrupale that amount, telegraphing the attack was coming through the middle. I decided upon a 4-1-2-1-2 ND and beat him 5:0.
I never play with 4-2-2 i don't like. I'm play as first tactic 4-1-2-1-2. Arrows only on MC. Today on Final Cup, i play with a guy with tactic 4-1-4-1 pfff very strong defense. he team rate 23,9 and my team rate 26,2 and i win him 2-0. With possession 60 for me and 40 for him. .

I thought will be a draw, but I made the change. I think back I should not make those change (changing player)
However, Thanks Guys
uhmm...Ryan...i think you deployed an illegal formation...did your possession never overcome 20%? If so, that is and that's the reason of your default.
a ....
Bubba not only me on illegal formation

NOW YOU NEED TO TEACH ME HOW TO WIN
With not illegal formation!
Hello!!!

This will explain you more than me!:p

OK This is not illegal formation
If I lost the game what you need to do?
Ryan, i'm level 10 and actually i occupy 2nd place in my league, there is no rules that will "teach how to win"...you have to experience every game, deploying that formation you judge right to get a good result, studying your opponent....try this and you'll see results incoming!
The one i can tell you, from my experience, is that "flanks moving" get good results, try a formation classic if you won't risks, a 4-4-2 with ML/R motivated and normal mentality
I don't want to hear S**t
I don't know much but there is no "how to win" manual.
If that's your formation, a counter-attacking side could expose the weakness in your teams aggressive attacking from the fullbacks unless you can dominate. Additionally, the blue arrowed DC might mess up any attempt to Play Offsides.
But, as I'm in Season 2, I'm still peeing into the wind. ;)
...so Ryan...what you want, have good time...
Bubba, you just need not mess up the formation

Bubba Are You Happy Now
hello, please, how to counter gk/4/ml, mc,mc/amr/2st. thanks
Stop to give the all players red and blue arrows. Leave off all blue and red, and keep only on 2 MC. MC*-mc-MC* (With * is red arrows).
Play 4-3-1-2 as i say and you will have more possesion.
Share here a photo please with your tactic.
mais calisc 442 the oponent is gk/4/ml, mc,mc/amr/2st
Give red arrows on ML-MR and 2 on ST-ST. I think is the better.
If don't work, change the tactic with 4-1-3-2 with red arrows on MC*-mc-MC*. (With * is red arrows).
if you give blue arrows the player with come back. blue give only if you have a very hard match.
Many thanks! Just won 4:1 the final of CL.
I've always lost to teams playing 4-4-2 against me. But yesterday i just won against the top team in my league. His quality was almost the same as mine. Last time we met, he won 1:0 over me. I was using 4-3-3 total football that time. So last night, was the deciding game because i was at second place with two points away from him. I decided to use 4-1-3-2. Both of us were watching the game. No goals were scored in the first half, but i dominated the possession. Second half, I dropped one of my strikers to an amc's position (my amc was playing as an mc since the start of the game because my other mc was injured). So my formation became 4-1-3-1-1. My team managed to attacked wildly and scored 3 goals and conceded none. I think it's safe to say that 4-1-3-1-1 is possible to counter 4-4-2. My only advantage was the game was played at home. So i automatically had more possession than him. But other than that, nothing.
Attacking
Through the middle
Own Half
Short passing (i think this helped me to win the possession)
Normal Tackling
Zonal Marking
I put red arrow on my central MC and AMC, blue arrows on both DC's. No arrows on fullbacks.
P/s; I always put my strikers on the opposite side to their preferred foot. Example, if my striker is right footed, i put him on the left box. And if he's left footed, it's the other way around. Doesn't matter if he's playing as a lone striker or with partners. If it's either foot, i put him in the middle (if playing a one st formation).
-----ST-------------
---------AMC------
I know the game is over, but i hope this'll help other people. Peace

I've noticed the 4-3-1-2 was very strong this season as well as other formations attacking the middle. When I saw the formations of your cup win yesterday (Congrats) I was abit worried because I had been using 4-1-4-1 to counter formations attacking the middle. The last couple season it worked very well against such formations (4-1-2-1-2, 4-3N-3, etc...). This season it wasn't the case as I ran 4-1-4-1 motivated when I was eliminated from both the cup and champions league. The CL-final was against the 4-3-1-2 and I lost 1:3, the cup was against 4-3N-3 and I went out 5:5 on the away goals tie-breaker. The warning signs were their but I stuck with the 4-1-4-1 due to past success and may have paid for it in the end. In both cases my team was equal to slightly better than the opponent.
[QUOTE=pcmacdaniel;252866]The major role is on players are playing. The stars is not always the best... when it is good the team, then surely it is better.
I had the luck to fall in players who really play well.
congratulations to your team my friend...
Decent choices. Obviously every team is different! :) I won twice in Cup Preliminary 0-2 and 1-0 using the 4-5V-1. I had my ML/DML player in DMC, but other than that everyone was in their preferred position. My opponent was very even against my team and his starting 11 was much better than his average since his bench and reserves stunk!
