    Offensive / defensive formations

    Hi all,

First off, I don't even know if there is such a thing. Point is that I know (more or less) how to put up a counter formation (I've read a bit around this forum ), but I'm not always sure on how to play it.

Usually I'm alternating between 4-5-1 V, which I play defensive (flanks, counter attack) en 4-4-2 ND, which I play attacking (through the middle), based on my oppenent's defense. Sometimes I need something else.

My next match in CL is against a 4-5-1 Flat of equal average quality. I've decided to play 3-5-2 flat, especially since I don't need four defenders against his lone striker. But I don't know if I should play it attacking or defensive.

So here's my question: do certain formations work better with either attacking or defensive mentality? If so, how do I recognize those? Or is attacking / defensive mentality based on totally different parameters (like average quality or playing style)?

Looking forward to hear your opinions.

My principle - home and superior (Q-wise), or away and much superior, play an attacking formation; otherwise defensive.

Although it can be over-ridden if I can see a history of the opposition overcoming superior opponents, then I play defensive.

I think in general, the more players nearer your goal than the opponents, the more defensive the formation.
Any formation or tactics advice given is based purely on experience with my teams...

Right, thanks. I'll see if I can figure it out.

Forgot about playing attacking at home when possible. I'll keep that in mind.
