What's the beat counter formation to use?

I don't know about formation, but try attacking short passes. My assistant told me the opponent cannot figure out how to stop our passing style. ( my formation was 4411, but I guess your main concern is to have at least 2 central midfield.)

in most cases it depends on your tactics and of your opponents tactics. try to Play 4-4-2 or hexagon
