I would try a simple 4-4-2.....
I think you can win with any formation :) I will just set hard attacking mentality because you will have 80% ball possesion.
Well I don't know, it's an illegal formation so anything will do lol..
Illegal formation... Just use any legal one to win =)

This counters his offensive formation and takes advantage of his illegal defense.
We cant just say "ïllegal formation" and think of an automatic win. There are still players on the field that can stop your team.
I would have thought that a simple motivated 4-4-2 would have taken care of this as well but I think my solution goes one step further.
BTW, what formation did he go with in the end?
