Cup game tomorrow, any ideas how I should set up?

I have a cup game against a level 7. My team is slightly better, but he has a formation I've never come across.

Usually I don't ask for help but this match is the toughest I've had in a while. If I win, it would be the furthest I've ever progressed in the cup.

His formation....

Seems very defensive formation but I think july pick the right formation for ya because since you say its important so i guess a more defensive approach will be good.

i played against it before and win .. but not sure which formation i used
but after playing for some time now, i feel it is better sometimes not be obsessed with counter formation and go for it , i would go with motivated 4-1-4-1 defensive, flanks, long and counter and try it for first 5 min and see if am dominating before switching to other formations above ... teams need mid, not only to dominate matches but track ball back and protect the back 4 .....with 4141 his wingers are 4 times marked , ex: his AMR, will be marked by not only the LB, but DMC, CD, and LM, same for other players, with counter, and def mentality, your LM & RM will be back more supporting your fullbacks, so you should be fine
your half will be too crowded, while his ones will be exposed to your long balls in counter
anyway, that is in theory , sure in game could be different thing, but i play 4141 and never get disappointed me, and lost only when i change it trying stupidly to counter other people formations ...

shwanko07 about that 4-1-4-1 i was thinking too ... very effective vs. that amr amc aml !

very offensive first 25 min of match then change to defense ! Counter attack , own half pressing , on flanks attack ,mixed pass on offensive and long passing on defense ,and very important no offside trap !

hhhh my orders are not the same but this formation is so flexible so why not

I'll have to play Petersen at MR then because I need him to play and he's a AMC/AMR player.

i have same problem, my best scout is AMR/AML/AMC.. so i start with him as MR and then push him to AMR and see if i lost possession or not .. if not i keep him as AMR .. problem is you will need him in this game as RM more to mark the winger
otherwise try above suggested V formation by others members which fit Petersen better ;)

4-1-4-1 didn't work.

I played with someone with the same formation in cup being it 10 quality over me. I countered using

DL DC DR
DMC DMC
MC MC
AML AMR
ST

It's a bit risky since you keep 2 dmcs for his 3 am's, but to counter that tactic i believe you need one more man at midfield (mc) than him able to open to your wings. One other option would be to play 2 amcs instead of the wings and try spear the center. I did pretty well untill i got a red card in both home and away matches, even given the difference (0-2 in the first, but 2nd goal taken dcd'ing with an illegal formation i couldn't log back to change, and 1-0 loss in the second match -after another red card-).

You can also play 4 behind with red arrows on laterals + 1 dmc only.

you can play 5 behind with 1 dmc too if you like defensive style. But that formation hurts if they control the ball.

it always work for me , was it motivated 4141?

I motivated it after the goal, it was normal 4-1-4-1 before. My star player didn't do anything because he doesn't like MR

it should be always motivated bcz of its defensive nature, did you tried to put your star as AMR (as i have same issue with my best scout who is AMR/AML/AMC) , i push him as AMR after 5 min as a test to see if i lose possession or not, if not i will keep him as AMR, but often need to remove the arrow to keep the balance right , but he will be motivated if he was RM, same as LB/RB/LM/RM/DMC. only lost once using this formation and it was with far superior teams, my mate since 4 seasons is trying to crack it and failing, beat him yesterday away 3-0

did you try any other formations after the goal? just out of curiosity.. bcz many suggested several formations with a base of 3N-3W at the back?

I played my own formation today, something I call "my secret weapon" and won 3-0.. beat him on aggregate
