A counter formation explain itself on the name: its need is to COUNTER effectively a team you want to render null. But that should be intended as when you are basically weaker than the other team. When you play someone who teoretically shall pressure you, you need your eleven in a position when you can block him and -counter-.

But if you are the STRONGER team, then by logic (and when game engine allows) it should be your team to hold the ball and pressure, and your opponents to try counter your formation. Why the strong should adapt to a weak? that's why imho using the same formation usually brings better scores and results, supposing you are strong. Ofc, that doesn't mean you should not check hte other's formation and take measures where you thin is needed. IE a blue arrow on your dmc if the opponent has 3 STs and no amc. that's my 2 cents
