Graph both formations over the same grid.
Now look at midfield. Notice anything?
He has 4 players vs your two. He kicked your butt in possession time, didn't he?

Now look at his attackers and your defense.
He's essentially one on one with his Strikers and AMC against your DCs and DMC. Your DL and DR may as well not even be on the field. (Note that if he has red arrows on his DL/DR, then they are covering your ML/MR.)

You probably scored a few goals against him because you have the same 1-on-1 against the middle of his D, but he effectively had a numbers advantage and, because of his midfield presence, he had better possession.

So, how do you:
  • Get more bodies on defense than he has on offense
  • Get a stronger midfield presence for better possession
  • Exploit any weakness he has on defense

just because both sides have 11 players doesn't mean it's an equal match.
