When playing a stronger opponent (avg quality about 5 higher), i've heard it is advisable to play defensive with force counterattacks. However, is it advisable to do this at home, if you are likely to have about 55% possession with support?

not really, nothing to back it up....
use defensive - long pass - force counter and use red arrows on the direction u attck, for example if flanks on DL DR ML MR etc...
never use red arrows on ST or AML/R no matter the mentality for its useless BUT on AMC there is major effect so red arrow can be a blessing.
